The Seoul Metropolitan Government (SMG) is opening the city’s first nature recreation forest right in the heart of Seoul, just as summer reaches its greenest peak. Just 1.6 km from Buramsan Station (Line 4), it is easily accessible by local bus routes or on foot, and offers facilities and service on par with a hotel. There’s no need to fight weekend traffic to escape the city—this urban retreat lets you relax in nature after work and head back into town the next morning with ease.
The city announced the official opening of Surak Hyu, a new forest retreat in Dongmakgol of Suraksan Mountain (San 153-1 Sanggye-dong, Nowon-gu), on Thu, Jul. 17. Starting with Suraksan Mountain, the city plans to expand nature recreation forests across the city so residents can enjoy nature more freely in daily life.

Surak Hyu covers 9,800 m² and includes accommodations, three treehouse cabins, a restaurant, a forest cafe, a themed garden, and walking trails, all arranged in harmony with nature.
With 18 buildings and 25 rooms (for 2 to 6 guests), it can accommodate up to 82 people. Perched 14 meters above the ground, the three treehouse cabins each accommodate four with see-through glass ceilings for guests to relax under the stars.
Universal design elements such as accessible guest rooms, parking, and step-free pathways ensure that the space is inclusive and open to everyone. Surak Hyu’s Forest Therapy Center with wooden structures for creative activity and foot baths will begin construction next year and is scheduled for completion in 2027.
Lodging reservations open at 2 PM on the 10th of each month via the Korea Forest Service website (http://www.foresttrip.go.kr). Nowon-gu residents and persons with disabilities receive a 10% discount and can make early reservations from 2 PM on the 7th to 6 PM on the 9th each month.
Meanwhile, Gwanaksan Mountain has been selected as the second site for urban nature recreation forest, with construction set to begin in 2026 and to open in 2027.
